System fidelity is the degree with which real-world experiences are reproduced by an interactive system (McMahan and Herrera 2016).
Introduction
Virtual reality (VR) uses tracking devices, simulations, displays, and other technologies to immerse the user in a synthetic, spatial world seen from a first-person point of view that is under the real-time control of the user (LaViola et al. 2017). Many VR applications have been developed to provide realistic experiences by emulating the real world, such as phobia therapy, military training, and entertainment (Bowman and McMahan 2007). However, the efficacies of these emulated experiences are highly dependent upon the application’s implemented system fidelity.
