Definitions

Virtual Hand Metaphor is a set of interaction techniques for selection and interaction with objects that are within reach of a user’s arm. Virtual Hand Metaphor closely resembles real-life interaction with objects; the user manipulates the object directly using a virtual representation of their hand or hands. A more general term (3D interaction) includes Virtual Hand Metaphor as one of the common approaches to interaction with virtual objects in an immersive environment.

Introduction

Object selection and manipulation are basic tasks in 3D user interfaces. One way the task can be realized is through Virtual Hand Metaphor. In the spirit of natural-user interfaces (Buxton 2007), the Virtual Hand Metaphor borrows from the way users interact with real objects using their hands and adapts it for manipulation of objects presented in an immersive environment.
