Game theory relies upon mathematical calculations and is used to predict an outcome based on interactions among multiple parties. The theory is reliant upon independent decisionmaking of individuals (Huang et al. 2010). It has been utilized in numerous academic fields, including financial, pricing, advertising, and consumer behavior studies. Game theory is defined as “a mathematical method of decisionmaking in which a competitive situation is analyzed to determine the optimal course of action for an interested party” (American Heritage Dictionary 2000).
While more commonplace in other disciplines, game theory’s usage in tourism research is limited. According to Buckley (2013), its first application in tourism studies examined eco-conscious hotel strategies, published almost 20 years ago.
