The Republic of Argentina is situated on the Atlantic Ocean at the southernmost tip of South America, a position it shares with Chile on the Pacific Ocean (Fig. 1). It has an area of 2,791,810 km2 (1,077,923 mi2) and an estimated population of 45,808,747 in 2020 (INDEC 2020). According to the World Bank, while the country’s GNP in 2019 was 445 billion (https://datos.bancomundial.org/indicador/NY.GDP.MKTP.CD), there was no official information as to the contribution that tourism makes. The country has significant mineral reserves and a strong industrial sector, but agriculture (developed by the great influx of primarily Italian immigrants and particularly cattle breeding) forms the basis of its wealth. At the end of the eighteenth century, landowners selling cattle to meet the growing demand for meat in Europe became wealthy and began to spend a large part of their year overseas.
