Abstract

An aging population in conjunction with a worsening obesity epidemic worldwide is leading to a public health epidemic of older adults with considerable mobility and functional limitations. Sarcopenia is the age-related progression of decreased muscle mass, strength, and function. Though sarcopenia naturally occurs as part of the aging process, it can be exacerbated when coupled with obesity. Older adults with sarcopenic obesity are thought to have a synergistic risk of adverse outcomes compared to those with either sarcopenia or obesity alone. Consensus groups continue their efforts in creating standardized terms and definitions for identifying those at risk for sarcopenic obesity. The standardization of definitions is critically important in developing clinical trials for sarcopenic obesity that will lead to improvement in body composition and physical function. Multicomponent management strategies consisting of physical exercise and dietary modifications are safely recommended to mitigate worsening sarcopenia, preserve muscle strength, and promote weight loss. Promising, novel therapies have the potential to improve body composition and muscle physiology in this subgroup of patients.
