Abstract

Nowadays, shift work and night work are essential features of work organization. In addition to enabling the continuity of services to the population, such as the production of electricity, health care, transportation, or security, they are also used for the development of new technologies and for productive and commercial activities. The effects of shift work and night shift work have been widely documented in the scientific literature. This chapter describes the effects of night work on the biological circadian rhythms, ranging from sleep disorders to metabolic or cardiovascular diseases and cancer. It also reviews the known or suspected health effects of shift work or night shift work during the working life and provides a few recommendations that may help to reduce its health impact.
