Geriatric Gastroenterology

Abstract

Gastroparesis is a debilitating condition in which delayed gastric emptying is associated with a constellation of symptoms (nausea, vomiting, boating, abdominal pain, etc.) in the absence of mechanical obstruction. Gastric motility changes with aging; however, significant impairment of gastric emptying is not a normal physiologic aging process. Different causes may contribute to gastroparesis in the older population. The most common etiologies in all subgroups of ages are diabetes, idiopathic, and postsurgical, but certain common disorders (medication side effects and neurological conditions) in the geriatric population warrant special emphasis. Management involves dietary modifications, combinations of antiemetics and prokinetics cautiously selected to minimize likelihood of adverse events. Other treatment options should be cautiously selected in this particular population.
