Definition and Fields of Public Relations

The term public relations (PR) can be traced back to the end of the eighteenth century and is supposed to be introduced by Thomas Jefferson (Gackowski 2017). However, modern PR started at the beginning of the twentieth century with companies defending their reputation in newspaper articles. Later, Boston University was the first to establish a School of Public Relations in 1947 (Tikkanen 2022). Originating from the USA, PR expanded around the globe, for example, in Germany, five phases from the early formation in the 1960s, over expansion in the 1990s, up to a sophisticated differentiation can be observed (Köhler 2018). Today, PR is seen as a fundamental part of the general strategy of a company and encompasses all communication activities toward different stakeholder groups (Schmidt and Rennhak 2020).
