Abstract

SA8000 is a voluntary international standard for auditable third-party verification issued by Social Accountability International (SAI), a global nongovernmental organization founded in 1997 with the scope of advancing human rights at work. Today, the SA8000 Standard is the leading worldwide social certification standard for factories and organizations in the field of workers’ rights and sustainable workplaces. The Standard is consistent with the provisions of international conventions, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Labor Organization (ILO) conventions, and supplements national labor laws around the world to secure ethical working conditions. SA8000 is applicable to every type of organization, regardless of its size, geographic location, or industry sector, for profit or nonprofit scope. The Standard can help improve conditions relating to unsustainability that often derive from global supply chains, making it possible to protect workers from a lack (or even absence) of laws as per what often prevails in developing economies.
