Abstract

Marie-Madeleine Pioche de La Vergne, Madame de La Fayette (1634–1693), was a French novelist who published several anonymous works. Her most notable text was La Princesse de Clèves, which is widely recognized as having marked the beginning of the modern novel in France. Significantly, her work also made an impact in England, where the novel developed somewhat later. La Fayette immersed herself in Parisian intellectual circles, enjoying friendships with renowned writers such as François de La Rochefoucauld, Madame de Sévigné, Madeleine de Scudéry, and Bishop Pierre Huet of Soissons. Some modern critics have questioned her authorship, but the lack of any conclusive evidence has failed to convince the wider scholarly field.
