The need for in-home support for caregivers of children with ASD.

Historical Background

Prevalence rates of ASD have been steadily increasing for a number of years, and currently it is estimated that 1:59 children in the United States are impacted by ASD (Center for Disease Control 2019). Individuals with this disability have varying social-communication and behavior challenges. These challenges impact a person from infancy into adulthood and not only impact the quality of life of the individuals themselves, these impairments also affect their caregivers and other family members (Gupta and Singhal 2004). Caregivers of children with disabilities have been widely studied in research, with a more recent intense focus on understanding how parenting a child with ASD specifically impacts the family (i.e., Ekas and Whitman 2011; Freedman et al. 2012).
