Abstract
The brain is one of the most complex organs in the mammalian body, since the tissue is comprised of several cell types each with intricate subcellular organization. It is not surprising that the subcellular membranes isolated from brain may have their origin from several cellular sources. Most neurochemical studies, however, are confined to specific brain regions that are less complex in their cellular composition. For example, the cerebral cortex is largely occupied by neurons; consequently, this brain region is more suitable for isolation of nerve-ending particles. On the other hand, the brainstem is suitable for isolation of myelin. In spite of obvious limitations, unique brain subcellular membrane fractions have been isolated in highly purified form for various neurochemical studies. Since the procedures for isolation of brain subcellular fraction have been reviewed elsewhere (Whittaker, 1984; Henn and Henn, 1984), they will not be discussed in this chapter.
