About this book

This book covers the entire spectrum of retinology from basic genetics to clinical assessment, from common diseases to rare syndromes, and from simple medical treatment to complex vitreoretinal surgical procedures. The reader will learn about the retina in its entirety, which is fundamental to ophthalmic expertise. To aid in self-assessment, the book includes multiple-choice questions in exam format, which include detailed answers and are supplemented with diagrams and photos (from the author’s personal library of patient photos).

The book is intended for those sitting for the popular post-graduate degrees in ophthalmology in Europe (EBO), the traditional Royal College of Ophthalmology exams (RCO) and their Asian counterparts, including the ICO. It will also be of interest to qualified ophthalmic surgeons/ophthalmologists and can be used to self-assess readers’ current state of knowledge.

About the author

Melvin J Gouder graduated as a Medical Doctor from the University of Malta in 1999, followed by specialist training in England and Scotland, where he obtained his membership in ophthalmic surgery from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and subsequently became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He subsequently completed specialist training in Switzerland, which led to a Superior Specialist Diploma from the Univerista Della Svizzera Italiana (USI) in Lugano. He is a visiting senior lecturer at the University of Malta and an examiner at Malta Medical School.

From the author: I have sat for ophthalmology exams for the past twenty years, and preparation is of prime importance. I have also learnt that multiple-choice questions are a great way to learn and assess your readiness when it comes to preparing for post-graduate degrees. Commonly one finds multiple-choice books that try to cover all ophthalmology subspecialties in one book, and therefore leave major gaps in the preparation. My book offers more detailed coverage of the retina itself, which forms part of the bulk of ophthalmic knowledge. Including ca. 200-250 multiple-choice questions and highlighting any current controversies in the subject area, it offers a highly exam-oriented guide.
