Abstract

This study is dedicated to the investigation of the residual stress development in multi-pass butt-welded joints of ferritic-pearlitic steel pipes. Therefore, temperature profiles are taken during welding, and the residual stresses are determined by X-ray diffraction measurements on the outer and inner surfaces of the pipes. The distortion of the specimens is measured by laser triangulation. In order to identify the influence of the tubular geometry in contrast to a plane one, plates are welded with the same parameters, and the results are compared. The residual stress distributions in both pipes and plates can be explained by phase transformations and thermal contraction. However, it is shown that the latter is the governing mechanism in the residual stress development in the pipes considered in this study, which is due to their distinct geometry.
