Abstract
This article describes the management of sex offenders in England. First, relevant aspects of British society and its legal system are illustrated before presenting some fact on sexual offending in England. This is followed by a description of the detention and treatment of sex offenders in the criminal justice system as well as in forensic psychiatric settings. The main part describes the Sex Offender Treatment Programme (SOTP), its structure and content and presents studies on the effectiveness of psychological interventions for sex offenders more generally. In particular, the most recent evaluation of the SOTP is presented, the results of which (lack of effectiveness of the programme) led to the discontinuation of the SOTP. Finally, legal initiatives and innovative interventions for the management of sex offenders in England are presented.
