Revisiting Fisher’s Analysis of the Martensite Microstructure

Abstract

In this work, the Fisher’s formalism to describe the relationship between the volume fraction and the number per unit volume of martensite units is revisited and modified to take into consideration autocatalysis, the martensite morphology and the leading role of the midrib in the genesis of the microstructure. The modified model can predict the variation of the mean volume of martensite over a significant range of fraction transformed. Validation was accomplished using data available in the literature.
