Missing Minorities: Explaining Low Migrant Blood Donation Participation and Developing Recruitment Tactics

Abstract

Missing Minorities (MIMI) is a research project initiated by the European Blood Alliance that aims to develop new strategies to recruit blood donors from minority groups. This paper contributes to this larger project by analyzing data of the German Socio-Economic Panel study 2011 that questioned over 20,000 respondents about their blood donation behavior. Within this sample, the authors identify 1,726 potential blood donors from various migrant groups. Applying logistic regression analysis, the authors analyze differences between blood donors and non-donors with migration background. The results show that non-donors trust other people significantly less, use the internet less often, and have a significantly lower reading ability in German. Based on these findings, the authors discuss the current practices in minority blood donor recruitment as found in the MIMI project. Furthermore, promising recruitment tactics for blood donation managers and areas for further research are derived.

Le projet Missing Minorities (MIMI, que l’on pourrait traduire par « minorités non représentées ») de l‘Alliance européenne du sang vise à développer de nouvelles stratégies pour recruter des donneurs de sang appartenant à des groupes minoritaires. Cet article contribue à ce projet d’envergure en analysant les données issues de l’étude de panel socio-économique allemand de 2011 où plus de 20 000 personnes ont été questionnées sur leur comportement en termes de don de sang. Dans cet échantillon, les auteurs identifient 1 726 donneurs potentiels appartenant à divers groupes de migrants. En utilisant le modèle de régression logistique, les auteurs analysent les différences entre les donneurs et les non donneurs dans la population des migrants. Les résultats indiquent que les non donneurs ont une confiance nettement moindre envers autrui, utilisent moins souvent l’Internet et lisent moins bien l’allemand. À partir de ce constat, les auteurs examinent les pratiques actuelles de recrutement de donneurs de sang issus de minorités, telles que le projet Missing Minorities les décrit. Ils en déduisent des stratégies de recrutement prometteuses à l’attention des responsables du don de sang, ainsi que des pistes de recherche ultérieure.

Zusammenfassung

Missing Minorities (MIMI) ist ein Forschungsprojekt der European Blood Alliance, das darauf abzielt, neue Strategien zur Anwerbung von Blutspendern aus Minderheitsgruppen zu entwickeln. Die vorliegende Abhandlung leistet einen Beitrag zu diesem Großprojekt, indem sie die Daten der 2011 durchgeführten deutschen Sozio-oekonomische Panel (SOEP) Studie analysiert, im Rahmen derer über 20.000 Personen zu ihrer Beteiligung an Blutspenden befragt wurden. Die Autoren identifizieren aus dieser Stichprobe 1.726 potenzielle Blutspender aus unterschiedlichen Minderheitsgruppen. Mittels der logistischen Regressionsanalyse werden die Unterschiede zwischen Blutspendern und Nicht-Blutspendern mit Migrationshintergrund untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Nicht-Blutspender anderen Personen bedeutend weniger Vertrauen entgegenbringen, das Internet weniger nutzen und über eine wesentlich geringere deutsche Lesefertigkeit verfügen. Beruhend auf diesen Ergebnissen diskutieren die Autoren die im Missing-Minorities (MIMI)-Projekt herausgestellten gegenwärtigen Praktiken bei der Anwerbung von Blutspendern aus Minderheitsgruppen. Des Weiteren werden vielversprechende Taktiken für die Verantwortungsträger im Zusammenhang mit Blutspenden sowie zukünftige Forschungsbereiche abgeleitet.

Missing Minorities (MIMI) es un proyecto de investigación iniciado por la European Blood Alliance que tiene como objetivo desarrollar nuevas estrategias para reclutar a donantes de sangre de grupos minoritarios. El presente documento contribuye a este proyecto más amplio analizando datos del estudio del Panel socioeconómico alemán de 2011 que preguntó a más de 20.000 encuestados sobre su comportamiento con respecto a la donación de sangre. Dentro de esta muestra, los autores identifican a 1.726 donantes potenciales de sangre de diferentes grupos emigrantes. Aplicando el análisis de regresión logística, los autores analizan las diferencias entre los donantes de sangre y los no donantes con antecedentes de migración. Los resultados muestran que los no donantes confían en otras personas significativamente menos, utilizan Internet con menos frecuencia, y tienen una habilidad de lectura en alemán significativamente menor. Basándose en estos hallazgos, los autores tratan las prácticas actuales en el reclutamiento de donantes de sangre de minorías según lo descubierto en el proyecto Minorías Desaparecidas (MIMI). Asimismo, se derivan tácticas de reclutamiento prometedoras para responsables de donaciones de sangre y áreas de investigación adicionales.
