Three mechanisms of formation of austenite and inheritance of structure in iron alloys

  • MECHANISMS OF AUSTENITE FORMATIONS IN IRON ALLOYS

Metal Science and Heat Treatment Aims and scope

Regular features of formation of austenite in Fe – Ni – C alloys with initial structure of two types (ferrite + cementite and martensite) are studied in a wide range of heating rates (0.05 K/min–5000 K/sec). Three mechanisms of formation of austenite are determined depending on the rate of heating of the steels. The features of nucleation and growth of austenite, the structural changes (the shape and sizes of austenite crystals, changes in the concentration of nickel and carbon), and the orientation relation of the phases are considered for each mechanism of transformation. The possibility of the massive mechanism of formation of austenite is substantiated thermodynamically.
