Epigenetic variability in agamospermous progeny of sugar beet

Abstract

Epigenetic variability in malic enzyme (ME1) was demonstrated in progeny of pollen-sterile sugar beet plants using starch gel electrophoresis. The number of phenotypical classes and their ratios provided evidence indicating that epigenetic variability results from silencing and redetermination of the alleles of theMe1 gene. Redetermination is the emergence of new allelic states (epialleles) of the enzyme gene that determine the formation of isozymes with changed electrophoretic mobilities.
