Summary
Bacteria which survive the pupal stage in flies are localized, before emergence of the fly, in the space between the developing fly and the pupal exuviae. When the fly emerges, they are present mainly on the body surface. In most cases the fly’s alimentary canal is bacteriologically sterile and contains (mainly in the hind intestine) products of the Malpighian tubes (chiefly uric acid crystals). After emerging the fly usually spreads the bacteria for a few hours, and in some cases for up to one day. From this the author assumes that this mode of transmisson is of little epidemiological significance.
The author attempts to explain survival of the microorganisms during the pupal stage as follows: During the pupal stage bacteria contained in the intestine of the larva enter the space between the imago and the pupal exuviae during separation of the puparium and the pupal exuviae, where they probably multiply in the exuvial fluid. Bacteria in the fly’s intestine probably die during processes associated with histolysis and histogenesis and are further decimated by the excretion from the Malpighian tubes, which accumulates in the hind intestine of the fly before it actually emerges.
Survival and persistence of bacteria during the pupal stage is only mechanical. It is not related to the basic processes of metamorphosis and is not bound to the inside of the organism.
