Summary
We study the essential self-adjointness of the Dirac Hamiltonian in the Coulomb field of a heavy point nucleus. For\(\tfrac{1}{2} \sqrt 3< \alpha Z< 1\) we give an elementary proof of self-adjointness, based on deficiency index arguments. For αZ>1, we construct a distinguished self-adjoint extension and compute the energy eigenvalues. The energy of the ground state does not approach the negative-energy continuum, as would be necessary for a «charged vacuum» to exist.
Для\({{\sqrt 3 } \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\sqrt 3 } 2}} \right.
