Antibody response of young animals to bacteriophages of different immunological behaviour: Φ X 174 and T2

Abstract

The antibody response of piglets to the two immunologically unrelated phages Φ X 174 and T2 was studied. Antibodies against both antigens were observed already on the third day after immunization. Some differences were noted in the immunological behaviour of the phages: They have different eliminating curves from the circulation of the immunized animal and different requirements for the thermolabile serum component of the complement or cofactor for the neutralizing reaction. This factor is necessary for neutralizing phage T2, but not for phage Φ X 174.
