Abstract

The primary dendrite arm spacing in succinonitrile-1.4 and 4.7 wt pet water alloys has been measured as a function of growth velocity and orientation with respect to the applied temperature gradient. The spacing was found to increase with angles from 0 to 40 deg at constant composition, growth velocity, and temperature gradient. From 50 to 70 deg, the secondary arms assumed the role of primaries (growing perpendicular to the traction drive direction), and the spacing rapidly decreased. The results are correlated geometrically, and some possible applications are suggested.
