Abstract

This was an exploratory effort to describe play patterns of preschool children in the family space of ten family child care homes. Results of observation using the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment scale (HOME) showed an above average level of cognitive stimulation. The Family Day Care Rating Scale (FDCRS) resulted in an above average program quality rating. Subscales of the two instruments were correlated but total scores were not. Event sampling of play in home spaces resulted in descriptive information about the dynamics of play with home furnishings, family members, and pets. Discussion focused on the intentions of the provider to incorporate family space in play and the possibilities for measuring that variable.
