Mechanical properties of human cancellous bone in the femoral head

Abstract

The ultimate compressive strength of human cancellous bone derived from femoral heads was found to range between 21 and 1963 Ibf/in2 (145-13535 kN/m2). A correlation coefficient of 0·70 was found for the relationship between compressive strength and apparent density of cancellous bone; however, no statistically significant correlation was found between compressive strength and location of the cancellous bone within a femoral head. The stress relaxation of cancellous bone, measured at widely differing initial stresses, demonstrates the viscoelastic nature of cancellous bone, and consequently the tendency to flow or creep under time-dependent stresses.

On a trouvé que la résistance limite à la compression de l'os poreux humain dérivé des têtes de fémur est comprise entre 145 et 1355 kN/m2. On a déterminé un coefficient de corrélation de 0,70 pour le rapport entre la résistance à la compression et la densité apparente de l'os poreux; cependant, on n'a pas trouvé de corrélation statistique significative entre la résistance à la compression et l'emplacement de l'os poreux dans une tête de fémur. La relaxation de contrainte de l'os poreux mesurée à des contraintes initiales entièrement différentes démontre la nature viscoélastique de l'os poreux et par suite la tendance à l'écoulement ou au fluage en cas de contraintes qui dépendent de la durée.

Der beste Druckfestigkeitswert für menschliche spongiöse Knochen, den man von Femurköpfen erhielt, bewegte sich zwischen 145 und 13535 kN/m2. Ein Korrelationskoeffizient von 0,70 wurde für die Beziehung zwischen Druckfestigkeit und scheinbarer Dichte das spongiösen Knochens gefunden; es ließ sich jedoch keine statistisch bedeutsame Korrelation zwischen Druckfestigkeit und Anordnung des spongiösen Knochens innerhalb sines Femurkopfes feststellen. Die Spannungsentlastung spongiöser Knochen, die unter Verdendung verschiedenster anfängher d Druckwerte gemessen wurde, beweist die viskoelastische Natur spongiöser Knochen und damit die Tendenz zum Fließen oder ‘Kriechen’ bei zeitabhängigen Belastungen.
