Ultrasonic rays in medical diagnosis—A survey

  • Published:
Medical electronics and biological engineering Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Abstract

The use of ultrasonic rays in medical diagnosis is reviewed from the unsuccessful early attempts to use transmission techniques. The succesful use of echo techniques is described from the simple display giving limited information to the most recent improvement in which a plan of a cross-section of the body is reproduced by the echo technique as a horizontal tomogram of the soft tissues. Examinations of the brest, liver, kidney, neck, limbs. rectum, ovary, uterus, eye and orbit are mentioned and the large factor of safety is stressed.
