Summary

The anim of this retrospective study was to assess the short- and long-term results of treatment with giant prosthetic reinforcement of the visceral sac (GPRVS) in men with bilateral inguinal hernias. From 1981 to 1995, 1,048 men, mean age 60 years underwent this procedure. 66% of patients were over 50 years of age. 198 patients were operated on for recurrent hernia (18.8%). A subumbilical midline approach was performed in 99% of cases. An unabsorbable prosthesis of approapriate size was placed in the preperitoneal space and sutured to the umbilical fascia. Maximum follow-up was 15 years, and 76.5% of patients were followed for more than one year. The immediate postoperative course was uncomplicated in 91.4% of cases. Postoperative mortality was 0.19%. A postoperative complication developed in 3.8% of patients. The recurrence rate was 1.6%. Despite advances in the laparoscopic treatment of groin hernias, this study demonstrates the short- and long-term reliability of GPRVS.
