Gastric mucins in four cases of zollinger-ellison syndrome

Abstract

Morphologic characteristics of human gastric mucosa and histochemical patterns of mucous secretion were studied in 4 stomachs resected for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. All stomachs showed fundic hyperplasia with almost total disappearance of the antropyloric zone, hyperplasia of mucous neck cells and abundant, diverse mucous secretion. The secretion of mucous cells was composed mainly of sialomucins; an increase in sulfomucins was sometimes noted. A glycoproteic component, occasionally sulfated, was also found in the secretion of chief cells.
