Summary
On the possible significance of Solanum demissum in improving the yield of the cultivated potato
In 1951 the tuber production of 615 seedling clones of potatoes could be studied. Of this material 530 clones derived from crosses between varieties ofSol. tuberosum and 85 from 3rd en 4th backcrosses ofSolanum demissum withSol. tuberosum (breeding scheme for resistance toPhytophthora infestans).
It appeared that on an average thedemissum hybrids produced more than crosses between varieties ofSol. tuberosum and among them also the highest yielders were found. Part of this higher yield may be caused by the fact that the plants are not damaged byPhytophthora. It is deemed probable also that genes ofSolanum demissum may contribute in a favourable way to the productivity just as in sugar-cane breeding the productivity is strongly increased by the use of the wild species,Saccharum spontaneum.
