Summary

After reviewing recent experimental studies on the thickening of polymer single crystals on annealing, it has been proposed that the thickening is merely a consequence of partial melting of the crystals followed by recrystallization with thicker lamellae. A simple theory has been proposed in which it has been assumed that the melting terminates within a negligible time scale and recrystallization takes place separately, which covers practically the whole range of the annealing time. In the process of recrystallization the similarity of the behaviour to that of the secondary stage in isothermal crystallization both for seeded and unseeded crystallization has been taken into account. In spite of the crude assumptions involved, the theory seems capable of accounting for experimental results obtained so far. Changes in the density and the macroscopic dimensions of the single crystal mat during annealing have been also discussed along the above line of argument.
