What ions experience on their way into a metal surface

Abstract

We discuss interaction of slow multicharged ions with metal surfaces, by considering recent experimental results for emission of electrons and soft x-ray photons as well as charge states of scattered particles. Simple concepts are developed to explain the main processes which take place before, during and after projectile impact on the surface.
