Summary
Qualitative studies have been made on the fungi in the rhizosphere of dwarf-bean plants using the soil-washing technique. The results obtained show small but consistent differences between rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere mycofloras.Fusarium spp.,Mucor spp.,Cylindrocarpon radicicola, certain sterile forms,Varicosporium elodea andHumicola grisea were more abundant in rhizosphere than non-rhizosphere soil.Trichoderma viride was less frequently isolated from rhizosphere than from non-rhizosphere soil.
Slight qualitative changes were demonstrated accompanying increasing plant age.Fusarium spp. increased in frequency of occurrence up to pod maturity and thereafter decreased in frequency of occurrence.Mucor spp. andC. radicicola increased in frequency with increasing plant age, whilst the converse was true forT. viride. No corresponding changes were observed in the mycoflora of non-rhizosphere soil.
