Summary
The correspondence between diagnosis on admission, operation report and histological findings was checked in 684 adult patients and 204 children. In the cases subjected to surgery the histological examination revealed acute purulent appendicitis in 41% of both children and adults, subacute appendicitis in 27% of the adults and in 15% of the children, and chronic appendicitis in 10% of the adults and in 2% of the children. In 25% of the adults and in 38% of the children appendicitis was not found. The 6 main symptoms, which were found in more than 66% of all cases in which surgery was indicated, were: loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fever and pains in the right hypogastrium. An increased axillar-rectal temperature difference was also frequently found, whereas leukocytosis was an inconstant finding.
