Summary
The adventitious roots of onion (Allium cepa L.) were treated either with growth retardant Phosfon-D (2,4-dichlorobenzyltributylphosfonium chloride) or with respiratory inhibitors: sodium azide or 2,4-dinitrophenol. An inhibition of respiration rate by the chemicals used, down to about 75% of the control rate, was paralleled by the occurrence of different configurations of rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in the treated cells as well as by the marked vacuolization of the cytoplasm. Possible causes of the observed phenomena are discussed on the basis of own and literature data.
