Summary
-
1.
It was shown that adsorption isotherms for benzene vapor can be determined at ordinary temperature and pressure by a method which, from the point of view of apparatus, is accessible to any chemical laboratory and which can be successfully applied to the determination of the surface area of catalysts with results that are in close accord with those obtained with the aid of high-vacuum apparatus.
-
2.
For specific surfaces ranging from 20 sq. mag upwards, the discrepancies between the results obtained by these two methods do not exceed 10%. The same degree of correlation is observed both for pure and mixed magnesia catalysts investigated by these two methods and also by the method [15].
-
3.
It was shown that method [15] can be applied to mixed catalysts based on magnesium oxide.
-
4.
The sources of possible error and methods of preparing samples for the determination are discussed.
