Professor Clifford Geertz is a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. He was formerly professor of anthropology at the University of Chicago, where he was also chairman of the Committee for the Comparative Study of New Nations. He is the author of, among other works,Peddlers and Princes (1963),The Religion of Java (1960),The Social History of an Indonesian Town (1965),Person, Time and Conduct in Ball (1966),Islam Observed: Religious Development in Morocco and Indonesia (1968), andThe Interpretation of Culture (1973). He is also the editor ofOld Societies and New States: The Quest for Modernity in Asia and Africa (1963).
