Abstract
The purpose of this article is to examine the literature linking phoneme awareness and reading acquisition and to examine the nature of this relationship in terms of learner and task. The paper begins with a definition of phoneme awareness and a description of the development of phoneme awareness. Findings from correlational and phoneme awareness training studies are summarized and the relationship of phoneme awareness to reading discussed. Last, explanations for low phoneme awareness skills and current instructional practices are presented to place the importance of phoneme awareness within a school-based context.
