Through recording of the action potentials it was determined that the mesothoracic scolopal organs ofNotonecta obliqua react to airborne sound within the range of 800 to 10000 Hz and those ofNepa cinerea within the range of 100 to 7000 Hz.

When a sound is made,Nepa displays an intimidatory posture, which suggests that this behaviour demonstrates a protection against enemies.
