Summary

A clinico-pathologic review of three cases of central pontine myelinolysis has been presented. The patients were nonalcoholics and the electrolyte balance was within normal limits in two of them. The antecedent illnesses were chronic encephalopathy, probably familial, craniopharyngioma and Wilson's disease respectively. The pontine lesions in the three cases were similar to those described in the previous references, although in Case 3 recent haemorrhages made the pontine lesion complicated. Modes of extension of the pontine lesion and inconstant but significant pathologic factors are briefly discussed.
