Zussamenfassung
Summary
In rabbits subacute and chronic edema were induced by lowering the pressure of the cerebral fluid. In the course of this experiment the alterations of the cerebral tissue were examinded by electron microscopy.
Within a period of 1–2 weeks the volume of the cerebral tissue reached the greatest extent.
The edema in cerebral cortex and white matter was characterized by an excessive swelling of astrocytes and their processes as well as by a distinct enlargement of the extracellular space in the white matter.
Already two days later after an increase of polysomes, glial filaments appeared in the perikaryon of astrocytes and their processes as a reaction manifested only by astrocytes. The production of filaments of the glia cells reached its peak in edema existing for 3–4 weeks.
In chronic edema glycogen granules accumulates in perikaryon and cellular processes as another sign of reactive capacity of astrocytes.
