Summary
Presence and size-relations of extracellular space in the cerebral white matter of normal rats and mice were studied.
Extracellular space is preferably found between tightly packed myelin sheaths and naked cell processes, in the form of a three- or multiangular wedge of an average diameter of 500–1000 Å. There is a greater physiological extent in the borderzone between cortex and white matter.
The measured volumen of the extracellular space, using photographs of nonedematous white matter, was approximately 10% of the total volume of the white matter.
These interparenchymatous cavities presumably play a special role in the exchange of substances, considering the slight capillary density of the white matter.
Fixation with glutaraldehyde and after-fixation with osmic acid, as reported bySabatini and co-workers, means a marked technical improvement in comparison to the immediate fixation of cerebral white matter with osmic acid.
