Micropolygyria and cerebral calcification in cytomegalic inclusion disease

Summary

Two cases of generalized cytomegalic inclusion disease in the newborn with calcification of the brain and cerebral micropolygyria are described and the literature on the neuropathological findings in this disease is reviewed. On the basis of the pathological findings the view is held that the salivary gland virus passing the placental barrier can provoke selective brain damage and true malformation in the embryo, and severe generalized disease in the newborn.
