Abstract

The variation of the microstructure with heat-treatment of transparent glass-ceramics based on the ZnO-Al2O3-SiO2 system has been investigated using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The principal crystalline phase was found to be ZnAl2O4, gahnite, when a minimum amount of nucleating agent, ZrO2, was present. The dependence of mean particle size, volume fraction and mean crystal spacing on the heat-treatment was also studied. It was found that the microstructural parameters were relatively sensitive to the time at the crystallization temperature of 950° C.
