Summary
Distribution curves of the thickness of fibrils and the volume percent of collagen in scars after alkali-burns, after operations, and in an opaque graft are compared with those of normal cornea and sclera. In scars the diameter of fibrils is larger (26–50 mµ) than in normal cornea (14–30 mµ). The vol. % of collagen in scars (17.0 vol. %) is similar to that in normal cornea, (14.5). The average volume of amounts to 50.0 vol. % in the sclera. Filaments with a diameter of 10 mµ are present only in scars. Within the opaque graft, regions resembling normal cornea are interspersed with typical scar tissue. The enlargement of fibrils combined with increased variation of their diameters seem to explain why the scars and homograft were opaque.
