Summary
A new method for the investigation of metal electrode surfaces in contact with an electrolyte is described. Attenuated total reflection spectroscopy (ATR) in combination with a fast fourier transform IR-equipment allows the direct detection of intermediate and reaction products on the metal electrode surface. Data are presented on the reactions of thin iron and cadmium layers, evaporated on germanium reflection elements, in concentrated alkaline solutions during the electrochemical oxidation and reduction process. The existence of different species [Fe(OH)2, HfeO −2 and Cd(OH)2] on the electrode surface is detectable during the electrochemical reactions in definite potential ranges.
