Summary
The structure of the melanocytes of the human iris was studied by electron microscopy. Melanocytes are mainly found in the anterior surface layer. Melanocytes are frequently found surrounding vessels and nerve bundles (“Hüllzellen”) in the iris stroma and occur together with fibrocytes in a typical manner. The cell membrane, on which numerous pinocytotic vesicles are observed, shows material comparable to a basement lamina. 80 Å filaments, a large Golgi area and sometimes cilia are further hitherto unknown structural characteristics of the melanocytes in the human iris. The number, size and density of the melanosomes vary according to the colour of the iris. An innervation of the melanocytes could not be found. It is assumed that, beside formation and storage of pigment granules, melanocytes have another functional significance hitherto unknown. From the structural point of view melanocytes may be related to smooth muscle cells in some way. The classification of the pigment cells of the human iris stroma is discussed with regard to their origin.
