Summary
Instrumental and radiochemical neutron activation analysis was applied to the determination of Mo, Hf, Ta, and W in grass. With the instrumental performance, limits of detection at the 0.1 Μg/g-level for Mo and W and at the 0.01 (Μg/g-level for Hf and Ta can be achieved. Simultaneously, additional 14 elements can be detected. The radiochemical procedure involves the decomposition of the sample using nitric acid, hydrogen peroxide and hydrofluoric acid, and a group separation of the indicator radionuclides 99Mo, 181Hf, 182Ta, and 187W on a strong basic anionexchange resin. The recoveries for the individual elements were determined by the radiotracer technique. With the radiochemical procedure, limit of detection of 80 ng/g for Mo, 20 ng/g for Hf, 20 ng/g for Ta, and 6 ng/g for W were reached. The described methods were applied for the analysis of contaminated and pure grass. For Mo and W, the results of both techniques were compared whereby an excellent agreement was achieved.
