Summary
Irritation of the postero-superior part of the tympanic membrane and canal wall skin with enbucrylate or gel foam in rabbits leads to cholesteatoma formation in 85% of the animals.
After elevating a tympano-meatal flap, the irritating substances were put in the middle ear of 25 rabbits. After 4 and 8 weeks a pronounced tissue reaction with cholesteatoma formation could be observed. Both the irritant substances and the trauma due to surgery are responsible for this marked reaction.
