Summary

The influence of a 48 hour starvation on the fine structure of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was investigated. The most prominent structural changes were observed when cells from an exponentially growing culture were treated: Besides some already known particularities, the most conspicious features were more or less complex compartments and myelin-like bodies. Their localization and fine structure show some parallels to mesosomes, lomasomes as well as vacuoles.

The development of the various kinds of compartments is regarded as a consequence of a reversible loss of differentiation produced by the extreme starvation. Their physiological function is discussed in relation to the activated degradation processes, necessary for survival.
