Summary
-
1)
In contrast to the growth of the thoracic aorta as well as of the pulmonary artery, the wall of the ductus arteriosus grows by apposition of mesenchymal tissue. During the period of growth there are no fundamental changes in the architecture of the wall of the ductus arteriosus. In spite of the increasing thickness of the wall, the lumen of the duct does not increase from the 8th foetal month onwards.
-
2)
Increase in thickness of the elastic membranes ends at an early age except in the lamina elastica interna which is under great functional stress. Tension within the wall is not absorbed by the strands of connective tissue but by strong musculature which is arranged in lamellae.
-
3)
The absence of changes due to preparatory angiomalacia in the ductus arteriosus of full-term cattle foetus is attributed to a particular distribution of the vasa vasorum. These vessels originate from a bronchial artery and supply five-sixth of the wall of the duct.
-
4)
Part of the glomus pulmonale develops in the adventitia of the aortic duct. Of all the ducts investigated in various species only that of the cattle foetus has a ring of presumable chemoreceptors which is situated at the pulmonary origin of the duct. These paraganglia are found in the outer parts of the media and adventitia. They remain unchanged during the first weeks of postnatal life whereas there is an involution of the aortic duct.
-
5)
As far as can be judged from morphological investigations, the ductus arteriosus of cattle is occluded as follows: Initially, there is a constriction of the musculature of the wall. This results in a diminution of the lumen and in an infarction of the inner half of the media. The obliteration of the lumen begins with a proliferation of the endothelium. Later the necrosis of the media is reorganized by elastic and fibrous tissue in centripetal direction. The decrease in vascularisation of the wall of the ductus arteriosus is accompanied by an atrophy of those muscular layers in the outer part of the media which had remained unchanged during the first 8 weeks of postnatal life. Finally, after some years, a generalized fibrosis replaces all the characteristic structures of the former ductus arteriosus.
Zusammenfassung
-
1.
